December 30, 2022 version

Q: In Acts, what are early New Testament manuscripts we have preserved today?

A: Here are many of them.

The date is given as 200-225 A.D. because the handwriting is similar to Papyrus Marmarica, which is almost certainly between 200-225 A.D. Alexandrian text.

Q: In Acts, what are the manuscript variations with the Textus Receptus, the basis for the KJV?

A: Jay P. Green, Sr. in the Interlinear Bible records variations in approximately 319 words between the Textus Receptus and the majority text. These are in 217 places. In addition, he also records approximately 20 words (18 places) of alternates.

Q: In Acts, what verses are in the KJV and NKJV that are not in the NIV and NRSV?

A: They are: Acts 8:37; 15:34; 24:6b-8a; and 28:29. These verses are in brackets in the uNASB. The KJV and NKJV have 1007 verses, and the NIV and NRSV have 1,003 verses.

Q: In Acts, what are some of the manuscript variations?

A: The book of Acts has a total of 18,450 Greek words in 1003 verses. This is the count in Aland et al. 5th revised edition, 4th revised edition, and 3rd edition, including 82 words in brackets. The text of the 3rd edition is on-line at http://www.greekbible.com. The book of Acts has an estimated word-for-word accuracy of 96.7 %, with 616 words in question. These are in 167 verses (341 places). Of the 341 places, 233 are single word, 46 are double word, and 13 are triple word. The two largest variants giving us uncertainty are both 23 words.

Below are the variations with the primary choice and the top alternate choice. Aland et al. 5th revised edition, 4th revised edition, and 3rd edition,  from which this primarily is based, also give a judgment of the degree of certainty per variation. The list below does not include many places where the evidence for a particular reading is so strong that the alternatives are very unlikely. See the next question for which manuscripts support which variants.

For reference, Bruce Metzger in A Textual Commentary On the New Testament p.222 and footnote 3 p.223 says there are 1,007 verses in Acts. He says that Westcott and Hort, using a typical Alexandrian text, counted 18,401 words, while A.C. Clark, using the later and less reliable western text (Bezae Cantabrigiensis (5th/6th century) and some others) has 19,983 words, which is about 8.5% longer. Bezae Cantabrigiensis if often somewhat longer; when the Alexandrian and Byzantine texts differ, it often includes both. The difference in length is greatest in the book of Acts though. It is generally agreed that Bezae Cantabrigiensis is not a close transcription of the book of Acts; rather it is more of a paraphrase.

Below are the variations with the primary choice and the top alternate choice. Scholars differ on the degree of certainty of many of the variations.

Green, The Expositor’s Bible Commentary volume 8, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament 2nd edition by Bruce M. Metzger, The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture by Bart Ehrman, The Complete Text of the Earliest New Testament Manuscripts edited by Philip W. Comfort and David P. Barrett, The Expositor’s Greek Testament edited by W. Robertson Nicoll, and footnotes in the NASB, NIV, NKJV, and NRSV Bible translations. Manuscripts of the Greek Bible : An Introduction to Paleography by Bruce M. Metzger also has interesting information on the characteristics and quality of the copying of each manuscript.

This chart shows variants of early writers and manuscripts of Acts. The darker the shading the later the writing. Shaded verses mean we are virtually certain of the correct reading. For each verse, the variant Aland et al. views as correct is labeled as “1”, the next choice “2”, and so on. Corrections to manuscripts by later scribes are not included. “A” after a choice simply means the choice with the fewest words. A question mark means it is probably but not certain the manuscript had these words. Parentheses means fragmentary or hard to read. Where there is more than one number, such as “1 /2?”, this means that one or more manuscripts in the family give the first choice, and one or more manuscripts are not clear, but appear to give the second choice. A parenthesis, such as (6), means that through translation or loss of letters are not sure, but it appears to support reading 6.

Bezae Cantabrigiensis (D) appears to be just a paraphrase of Acts. As an example in Acts 15:40 it has 5 words of variants, in Acts 16:35 it has 16 words, and in Acts 16:39 it has 33 words for variants.
