Middle 2nd century - 1999 - The Complete Text of the Earliest New Testament Manuscripts mentions that this is the earliest text that omits John 7:53-8:11 (the periscope of the adulteress). It based this date in part on the fact that the handwriting of Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 1074 of Exodus in the 2nd century is an extremely close match.

p75 Bodmer 14/15 Papyrii (most of Luke and John. John 1:1-11:45; 11:48-57; 12:3-13:1; 13:8-9; 14:8-15; part of 14:16; 14:17-29; 15:7-8) 175-200 A.D., or 175-225 A.D. (Jn 7:53-8:11 was never present.) Q: In Jn, what are the manuscript variations with the Textus Receptus, the basis for the KJV?

A: Jay P. Green, Sr. in the Interlinear Bible records variations in approximately 166 words between the Textus Receptus and the majority text. These are in 133 places. In addition, he also records approximately 65 words (42 places) of alternates.

Q: In Jn, what are some of the manuscript variations?

A: The Gospel of John has a total of 15,635 Greek words in 879 verses. This is the count in both Aland et al. 3rd edition and Aland et al. 4th revised edition, including 252 words in brackets. The text of the 3rd edition is on-line at http://www.greekbible.com. The Gospel of John has an estimated  word-for-word accuracy of 96.6 %, with 524 words in question. These are in 178 verses (197 places), out of 879 total verses. Of the 196 places, 135 are single word, 38 are double word, and 8 are triple word.

Below are the variations with the primary choice and the top alternate choice. Aland et al 4th revised edition and 3rd edition, from which this primarily is based, also give a judgment of the degree of certainty per variation. The list below does not include many places where the evidence for a particular reading is so strong that the alternatives are very unlikely. See the next question for which manuscripts support which variants.

Jn 1:1 “was God” vs. “was the God” only in L (9th century), an 8th century Alexandrian manuscript, and some later ones, so not counted in the totals) (Jesus, Reinterpreted p.179)

Jn 1:3 “not even one [thing]” vs. (one letter different). (2 words)

Jn 1:3-4 the placement of a period. Punctuation was not in the original Greek (in p66, Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, or Alexandrinus) so no words counted in the totals.

Jn 1:4 “was the light” (Vaticanus, Alexandrinus, Byzantine Lectionary, Bohairic Coptic, Ephaemi Rescriptus, Armenian, Georgian, Armenian, Diatessaron, Irenaeus Against Heresies book 1 ch.8 p.328” vs. “is the light” (Sinaiticus, Bezae Cantabrigiensis, Sahidic Coptic, Fayyumic Coptic) vs. “the light” (only one manuscript from the 5th century)

Jn 1:13a “who was born” all manuscripts vs. “who were born” (Tertullian accused Valentinian Gnostics tampering with this in On the Flesh of Christ ch.19 p.537, so not counted in the totals)

Jn 1:13b “who (singular) not of bloods” vs. “not of bloods” vs. “who (plural) not of bloods”

Jn 1:13c “bloods, nor of man’s will” (p66, p75 (Bodmer II, Sinaiticus [except missing of], second corrector of Vaticanus, Byzantine Lectionary, almost all others) vs. “bloods” (original Vaticanus) (since the evidence of the second reading is so slight, so 4 words not counted in the totals)

Jn 1:15 “This one was of whom I said” vs. “This one was of whom to you I said”

Jn 1:18 “only begotten God” vs. “the only begotten god” (Syriac Peshitta) vs. “the only begotten son” (2 words)

Jn 1:19 “sent to him … Levites” (Vaticanus, original Ephraemi Rescriptus, Sahidic Coptic, Bohairic Coptic) vs. “sent … Levites to him” (Alexandrinus) vs. “sent … Levites” (Sinaiticus, some Byzantine Lectionary) (2 words)

Jn 1:21 “You are Elijah?” vs. “Elijah are you?”

Jn 1:26 “stands” vs. “stands” (The only difference is for ease of pronunciation, like “a” and “an” in English, or some uses of “le” in Mandarin Chinese.)

Jn 1:28 “Bethany” (p66, original Sinaiticus, p75, Vaticanus, Original Ephraemi Rescriptus, some Byzantine Lectionary, Bohairic Coptic, Origen discussed this, Chrysostom)  vs. “Bethabera” (second corrector Sinaiticus, second corrector Ephraemi Rescriptus, some Byzantine Lectionary Armenian, Georgian, Origen discussed this, Cyril of Alexandria.) The Text of the New Testament by Bruce Metzger (1968) p.199 said that the church leader Origen (and texts copied from his work), introduced the second word to remove what he erroneously thought was a geographic difficulty. So this is not counted in the totals.

Jn 1:34 “the son” vs. “the chosen” (The “son” is in corrected Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, Vaticanus, Cantabrigiensis, the Byzantine Lectionary, Bohairic Coptic, Armenian, Origen, Chrysostom. The “chosen” is in p5 (200-240 A.D.), original Sinaiticus, Sahidic Coptic)

Jn 1:36 “Behold the Lamb of God” vs. “Behold the Christ, the Lamb of God” (only in Armenian and Curetonian Syriac, so not counted in the totals)

Jn 1:41 “first found own brother” case of “first”

Jn 1:49 “you are the Son of God” vs. “you really are the Son of God” (p66, 1241)

Jn 3:5 “God” vs. “Heaven”

Jn 3:13 “son of man” (p66, p75, Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, Sahidic Coptic, Fayyumic Coptic, some Georgian, Diatessaron, today: NIV, Wuest, NASB, UNASB, RSV, NRSV) vs. “son of man who is in Heaven” (5 words) (perhaps original Alexandrinus, Byzantine Lectionary vs. “son of God who is in Heaven” Italic, Curetonian Syriac, Palatine Syriac, Armenian, Ethiopic, some Georgian, Chrysostom today: KJV, NKJV, Green, NIV footnote, RSV footnote)

Jn 3:15 “in/on Him” vs. “(contraction of) upon/in Him” vs. “in Him”

Jn 3:20 “the works of them” vs. “of them the works”

Jn 3:25 “with Jews” vs. “with Jews”

Jn 3:28 “you to me witness” vs. “you witness”

Jn 3:31-32 “is. What he has seen” vs. “is. And what he has seen”

Jn 4:1 “Jesus” (Sinaiticus, Bezae Cantabrigiensis, some Syriac, some Bohairic Coptic, Fayyumic Coptic, Armenian, Chrysostom) vs. “lord” (p66, p75, Alexandrinus, Vaticanus, Byzantine Lectionary, some Syriac, Sahidic Coptic, some Bohairic Coptic, Georgian)

Jn 4:3 “went away again” (Bodmer II, Sinaiticus, corrected Vaticanus, Ephraemi Rescriptus, Sahidic Coptic, Fayyumic Coptic, vs. “went away” (Alexandrinus, original Vaticanus, Byzantine Lectionary)

Jn 4:5 “Sychar” vs. “Sichar” (one letter difference) No major early manuscript has the second spelling, so 1 word not counted in the totals.

Jn 4:9 “not for associate Jews [with] Samaritans” (almost every manuscript) vs. (absent) (original Sinaiticus, Bezae Cantabrigiensis, Italic, Fayyumic Coptic) (5 words)

Jn 4:11 “the woman” (p66 corrected, second corrector Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, Bezae Cantabrigiensis, f1 family, f13 family, many others)) vs. “she” (p75, Vaticanus, Syriac, Achemid Coptic, Diatessaron)

Jn 4:25 “I know” vs. “we know”

Jn 4:35-36 placement of a period. (The originals, p66, p75, and original Sinaiticus did not use punctuation, so not counted in the totals)

Jn 4:51 “their child” vs. “your child”

Jn 5:1 “feast” vs. “the feast”

Jn 5:2 “at the sheep gate a pool” vs. “sheep gate a pool” (2 words)

Jn 5:2 Spelling. “Bethsaida” vs. “Bethesda” vs. “Beth-zatha”

Jn 5:3 “withered ones” vs. “withered, paralyzed ones, awaiting the stirring of the water” (6 words)

Jn 5:4 The entire verse is absent vs. “for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.” John 5:4 is absent in p66, p75, Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, Sahidic Coptic, Bohairic Coptic, and the original copies of Ephraemi Rescriptus, Alexandrinus, and the Diatessaron. The church writer Nonnus (431 A.D.) does not have this. The earliest copies with John 5:4 are the Armenian and Georgian versions (both 5th century), and later corrections to Alexandrinus, Ephraemi Rescriptus, and the Freer Gospels. However, the church fathers Tertullian (200-240 A.D.), Ambrose, Didymus, Chrysostom, and Cyril refer to this in their paraphrastic renderings. Conclusion: Either this was added later, or it was left out of some manuscripts at a very early date and added back later. The judgment of Aland et al (3rd edition) is that “A - virtually certain” that it should be omitted. (29 words)

Jn 5:7 “while I am coming” vs. “while I drag myself” (Armenian only so not counted in the totals. See The Journey from Texts to Translations p.249.)

The Expositor’s Bible Commentary vol.9 p.91 says that no early commentator mentions it until Irenaeus, and it is only in the Latin translation of Irenaeus. (168 words).

The following manuscripts included it, but with obelisks showing a question about its authenticity. E, S, Lambda, Pi, l 077, l 443, l 445, l 69m, l 170m, l 185m, l 211m, l 1579m, l 1761m. See Bruce Metzger Textual Commentary 2nd edition p.219-223 for more information on why some think it should be excluded. For the other view, Zane C. Hodges in Greek New Testament, Introduction p.xxiii-xxxii says that more than 900 manuscripts include it.

1 - 12th century                      118 - 13th century

131 - 14th century                 209 -14-15th century

Jn 21:25 Add amen at the end. (Some late manuscripts have 3 words, “Amen according to John” (so this is not counted in the totals) (Many Armenian manuscripts add the story of the woman caughtin adultery at the end.)

Manuscripts of the Greek Bible : An Introduction to Paleography by Bruce M. Metzger also has interesting information on the characteristics and quality of the copying of each manuscript.

This chart shows the variations of some of the manuscripts of John, with the one Aland et al. views as correct labeled as “1”, the next choice “2”, and so on. Corrections to manuscripts by later scribes are not included. A question mark means it is probably but not certain the manuscript had these words. Parentheses means fragmentary or hard to read. Where there is more than one number, such as “1 /2?”, this means that one or more manuscripts in the family give the first choice, and one or more manuscripts are not clear, but appear to give the second choice. A parenthesis, such as (6), means that through translation or loss of letters are not sure, but it appears to support reading 6. There are so many manuscripts and writers that they cannot all be listed here; this shows the most significant early ones.

Other writers who referenced John but are not included in this grid:  Evagrius, Ptolemy according to Irenaeus (Jn 1:4), Meletius, Tertullian, Valentinus according to Tertullian (Jn 1:13a), Naasenes and Perateni according to Hippolytus (Jn 1:4), Heracleon according to Origen, Heraclides according to Origen (Jn 1:3-4), Victorinus of Pettau (Jn 3:34), Methodius (Jn 1:13b), Eusebius (Jn 5:2; Jn 19:24), Athanasius (Jn 8:59), Niceta (Jn 16:13), Faustus-Milevis (Jn 16:23), Leo (Jn 16:13), Theodore (Jn 16:31), Vigilius (Jn 17:21), Severian (Jn 20:23), Petilianus (Jn 17:12), Faustininus (Jn 20:30), Bariona (Jn 1:42), Quodvultdeus (Jn 19:29), Porphery according to Jerome (Jn 7:8), Pacian (Jn 7;43-8:11; Jn 13:10), Letter of Hymenaeus (Jn 1:3-4), Marcus of Eremita, Zeno (Jn 3:13), Tyconius (Jn 7:39b), Anonymous Treatise on Rebaptism (Jn 6:15b, 7:39a, 7:39b), theodoret (Jn 1:3-4), Rufinus (Jn 7:53-8:11), Ampliodotus (Jn 12:1), Optatus (Jn 13:10), Eunomius according to Cyril (Jn 12:28), Marcellus (Jn 12:46), (Socrates)  (Jn 8:59), Cyril of Jerusalem (Jn 8:38a), Orsiesius (Jn 10:11), Apostolic Constitutions (Jn 10:11; (Jn 13:26a)), Vigilius (Jn 9:35), Jusippus (Jn 11:50), Theophilus of Alexandria (Jn 11:25), Gaudentius (Jn 1:4), Hesychius (Jn 1:4; 16:23), Sulpicius (Jn 1:13b), Macarius/Symeon (Jn 1:13b), Theodcore of Ancyra (Jn 1:13b), Serapion (Jn 1:42), Alexander (Jn 1:18), Gregory- Elvira (Jn 1:18), Hegemonius (Jn 1:28), Victorinus of Rome (Jn 1:18), N (6th century), Eustatius (Jn 1:12), Proclus (Jn 1:18), Asterius (Jn 1:34), Varimadum, Theodotus, Apollinaris, Gregory Nanzianzen, Gregory Nyssa, Basil of Cappadocia,  Adamantius, Severian, Ambrosiaster, Victonrinus of Rome, Speculum, Juvencus, Chromatius, Ampliochius, Epiphanius, Phoebadius (Jn16:27), Gospel of the Egyptians according to Ambrose (Jn 1:3-4), Jerome, Priscillian (Jn 8:25), Augustine, Didymus, Theodotus of Heraclea, Paul of Emesa (Jn 1:3-4),
