General Queries about the gospels-Antwan Jubran-part 1

The great masters in history usually have disciples, and then they develop and teach a course or a book that has their ideas, thoughts and instructions. |
Luke, in the beginning of his gospel, writes: "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed" (Lk 1:1-4). Does Luke look more punctilious or correct than other Evangelists, especially Mark, in arranging and organizing the materials of his gospel? Did he arrange the incidents chronogically, unlike others? Does it mean that there were some doubt in the writings of others? |

The story of Jesus' Baptism at the hands of John the Baptist and His temptation by Satan is written in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but it is not in the gospel of John. Why? |

During the baptism of Jesus, why do we find God saying in Matthew, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (talking about Jesus) while in Marks and Luke, God says: "Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (addressing Jesus Himself)? |
The sermon on the mount occurs in Matthew and Luke, but we don't see it in Mark or John. Why? Is it possible that this incident did not take place literally, but that it is a compilation of Jesus' teachings as the Early community understood them, as some critics say? |
Jesus' cleansing of the Temple, why does John put it in the beginning of his gospel (John 2: 13- 25) while the other Evangelists put it at the end of Jesus' life on earth (Matthew 21: 12- 13; Mark 11: 15- 19; Luke 19: 45- 48)? |

Why do we see difference in the details and meanings in the incident of Jesus' death between Mark and Matthew? In Mark (Mk 15: 37- 38) we hear that Jesus "cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom". This looks like a real literal narration of what happened. But Matthew (Mt 27: 50- 53) says: "Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,". Here the incidents look unreal or literal, but rather allegorical, and they remind us with the picture and description of "the great day of the LORD" (Zephaniah 1:15; Joel 2:10; 3: 3-4; Amos 8: 9- 19; 9:2). Is it true? How do you explain this difference? |

When Jesus asked the disciples: "whom say ye that I am?", the answer of Peter was different in the gospels. According to Mark the answer was: "Thou art the Christ" (Mk 8L 29), in Luke "The Christ of God" (Lk 9: 20), and in Matthew : "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Mt 16:16). What did Peter exactly say? What was the true form of his confession? And why is this variation in Peter's answer? |

Many say that "no story about Jesus without theology". So, in the incident of Baptism, for instance, we see Jesus is being baptized, the Spirit like a dove descending upon him and the Heavenly Voice: " Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Mk 1: 11). This incident maybe did not take place as it was written in the gospels, i.e., all at once, but gradually, during the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. So, the Spirit that descended upon Jesus refers to the next age to come. Also, the open heaven, descending of the Spirit, the voice of the Father, and the Messiah present there, indicate that the last days started to dawn and the salvation is close. What do you think about that? Do you think that the Baptism of Jesus was allegorical symbolic? Why? Or why not? |

The four gospels agree that the Last Supper was Thursday evening, and that the crossing of Jesus was in Friday. But they do not agree upon whether the Last Supper was a Passover Supper. What do you think? Was it a Passover or a regular ordinary supper? |

The meeting of Jesus with the "Woman of Canaan" (Mt 15: 1- 28), who asked Jesus to have mercy on her, and to whom Jesus said: "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel", why do we find it only in Matthew? Also the command of Jesus to His disciples: "Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Mt 10: 5-7)? Are these two sayings are by Jesus really, although they contradict with His universal salvation message? Or they are a fabrication or creation by the early church communities? |

In the gospels we find Jesus promises all people with salvation without any differentiation or discrimination between them, whether they were Jews or nations or pagans, but in Matthew We find the focus is on the Jews for salvation. What do you think? |

In the gospel of Mark we find Jesus keeping His Messianism secret, (Mk 1: 24; 1:34; 5:34; 8:30; 9:9), but in the other gospels we find Him usually drawing the attention of people to Him openly as a Son of God, through His words or deeds. Why? |
In the Sermon on the Mount, Did Jesus say, as in Mark, "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 5:3), or "Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God", as it says in Luke (Lk 6:20)? What is the explanation of this variation between the two gospels while they are talking about the same story? |
John Chrysostom says that if the four Evangelists agreed upon all the details, they would be accused to have plotted to make their stories alike. Therefore, we can consider that the variations in their gospels as an evidence that each one was independent worked separately from the others and a proof that their stories are genuine and true. What do you think? But I personally think that the Evangelists should have written about the same incidents with a different words, language and style. Also, what do you think? |

In Matthew (Mt 8: 2- ), we read about a leper, who came to Jesus, worshipped him , asked Him to heal him, and Jesus cleansed him. But in Luke (Lk 17: 12- ) we read about 10 men that were lepers whom Jesus met in a village. They stood afar off, lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when Jesus saw them, he did not need to touch them but said to them, Go show yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. Were they 10 lepers or just one? If it was the same story, why there are different details between the two gospels? |

Did Jesus start His mission in Judaea and Jerusalem, as John says (Jn 1: 35- 42), or in Galilee as Mark says (Mk 1: 14)? Is there any definite meaning or significance in this?

In Justin the Martyr (Dialogue 35: 3) there is a saying to Jesus that "there will be riots and conflicts", that is does not exist in the gospels, but it is written in the Syriac text of "Didache" (6, 5) and Clement's Homilies (2, 17 and 16, 21), and also in the Coptic Gospel of Thomas (16). And these sources are separated and unrelated to each others. How can we explain that? |

In Mark 16: 16, Jesus says: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved". In Romans 6:3, Paul says: "so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death". In 1 Peter 3:21, Peter says: "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ". Does these verses mean that Baptism is as necessary as faith to salvation? And does this means that it is not a "volitional ordinance" as Evangelicals say, but an obligatory procedure? |
In Mark 16: 16, Jesus says: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned". So, man has no choice. Man must believe, otherwise he would be condemned and punished. Where is the human freedom of religion or freedom of faith for man? How does Jesus force people to believe or they will be damned? |
Mark 16:17-18 says: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover". And Paul put a list with these same abilities as the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12: 10; 12:8). Does this mean that these are the signs of true faith? Should all believers have these gifts throughout the days? Why we no more see these signs in Christians? |

The story of Transfiguration, why we read it only in Matthew, Mark, Luke but doesn't exist in John? |
From Matthew and Mark we feel as if Jesus went up into the high mountain for the purpose that He is transfigured, (Mt 17:1-9; Mk 9:2-9), while in Luke we find that Jesus went up to the mountain in order to pray, and transfiguration happens while he was praying (Lk 9:28-36). What is the explanation to this? |

Mark says in (Mk 1: 15), "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand", using the Greek verb "eggizo" in the past tense, which indicates that the kingdom of God approached but did not prevail yet. But in Matthew (Mt 11:4-5) Jesus reveals that the Kingdom is present in time and related to His person, because Matthew did not use the expression "kingdom of God" neither the verb "eggizo". Why is this variation between the two gospels as for the concept of the Kingdom? |

In narrating the incident of the Last Supper in Luke, and also in Paul's Corinthians 11: 24, Jesus says|: "this do in remembrance of me". But this same phrase doesn't occur in Mark (Mk 14: 22) or Matthew (Mt 26:26), but they say just: "Take, eat: this is my body". Why?

Who was exactly that woman who poured the ointment on Jesus? Because Matthew says (Mt 26: 7-): "There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat", while Luke (Lk 7:37) says: "And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment", and John says, "(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)" (Jn 11:2), "Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair" (Jn 12:3). |

At the cross, the centurion says in Mark, "Truly this man was the Son of God" (Mk 15:39). But in Luke he says, "Certainly this was a righteous man" (Lk 23: 47). What did he exactly say? What reason is behind this difference in his saying? Is that theory true, which says that this incident did not happen, but it was a connotation or allegoric to indicate that nations came into faith in Jesus Christ, this truth that happened later? |

The four gospels tell the story of Jesus' feeding the people, with the same details: (5 loaves, 2 fishes, eaters 5000 , remained 12 baskets). (Mt 14:15- ); (Mk 6:38-); (Lk 9:12- ); (Jn 6:3-). The question is: To what extent is this incident important, so that the 4 gospels told it with the same details, What are the theological truths in it, and what is the significance of it? |

We notice that Matthew tells in the same gospel two Stories about feeding people: (Mt 14:15- ); (Mt 15: 32-), but with different details, and Mark also does the same: (Mk 6:38-) ; (Mk 8:6-). Why does Matthew and Mark tells the same story twice? Is it allegorical story, that's why he repeated it? Or the incident took place twice in reality and with variant details? |

In the Gospel of Luke (Lk 10: 1) we read: "After these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come". The question is: 1- for what reason Jesus sent those 70 after He has sent the 12 (Lk 9:1)? Was their task or destination different? Does number 70 have a symbolic or allegorical meaning? Did those 70 include the original 12? 2- Why the other gospels do not mention this incident at all? Or, it was an allegorical story and it did not happen in reality?

The Magi (wise men) in the story of Jesus Birth, we find them only in the gospel of Matthew (Mt 2: 1). Why the other gospels do not talk about them? Is it an allegorical story to indicate the preaching of the early church community, who realized that the Jews refused Jesus so they took care of the nations instead of them, and so made the Magi to be the first ones to worship Christ, in contrast to the leaders of the Jews, Herod and others, who tried to kill the baby Jesus? |

A Commentator says: " Jesus came, not as the military conqueror of Revelation 19, but as the Suffering Servant (Isa 53) and humble leader (Zech 9: 9). The Kingdom, therefore, is inaugurated (Mt 3: 2؛ 4: 17؛10: 7؛ 11: 12؛ 12: 28؛ Mk 1: 15؛ Lk 9: 9, 11؛ 11: 20؛ 21: 31-32), but not consummated (مت 6: 10؛ 16: 28؛26: 64)". What does it mean? Is the kingdom in present or in future? Or it was inaugurated with the incarnation at Bethlehem and will be consummated with the second coming of Christ? |

If the Gospels were enough for the needs of the church or the believers, the Holy Spirit weren't to need to inspire Paul to write those epistles that handle doctrinal issues and also local church problems. So, we can not say that the Spirit stopped inspiring Godly men to explain or show the Divine opinion or attitude of different current issues throughout days. That's why we can say that the Divine inspiration did not and will not stop until the second coming of Jesus and the end of time. What do you think about that? |

We see that Matthew, unlike other gospels, tries always to describe Jesus as a Lord who is almost glaciated who often hides His emotions, while the rest of the gospels portray Jesus the man with all His emotions and reactions and, seemingly, flaws. Why? |

John wrote (the Gospel of John) to call people to believe in Christ. So, the Gospel is for unbeliever to believe. But John wrote (the Revelation) for a believing people, under the persecution of Nero to Christians, so that to give believers hope and encouragement and also to keep faith. Isn't it? Or the truth is that the two books are written by two different authors, taking into consideration the variety and difference in the style and purposes of writing? |

Some say that the scribes used to change some words or phrases when they copied the manuscripts of the scriptures, so that to clarify or simplify the idea for the readers. For instance, in the Gospels, we find Mark says in (Mk 2:4) that the four men who were carrying the sick of the palsy and brought him to Jesus to heal him, "they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay". But Luke in (Lk 5:19) says that "they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus". The same happened with the Epistles of Paul. For instance, the phrase "Word of Christ" in (Colossians 3:16), we find scribes replaced it in other manuscripts with "Word of God", "Word of the Lord", and so. Is that right? Does this affect the meaning or the doctrines? |

Why is the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew (Mt 1: 1- 17) is different from that in Luke (Lk 3:23-38)? And why are both of them are different from than the texts of the Old Testament? Was it just an apologetic invention aims at giving Jesus a Davidic origin? On the other hand, these variations and differences aren't they throw doubt on the truth that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah? |
